The Nuns (by Sharon)

My childhood days at Catholic School in the late 1940's and 1950's. We were taugh by very strong discipinarians. You learn their way or no way.

My sixth grade year I especially remember. Our Nun was old and mean toward us all.I was the one in the class that thought every thing was funny. I got into trouble. I got hit with the ruler wrapped in thick tape on the front of my hands and the back of my hands many times. She didn't let any thing get by her.We used to say she had eyes in back of her head. On a daily basis just about all of us got hit with the ruler or the pointer stick. One thing we never did was talk back to her.

One morning one of the boys talked back to her.She got him by his ear and was on her way to the Principal's Office. Before she got to the door, he broke away from her. The chase began around the classroom. Up and down the rows they went. We were all laughing. I guess you would say I was the leader.

When she finally caught him, she got me for laughing away. She took us both to the Principal's Office. We had to sit there till lunch hour. Then after lunch we sat still till it was time to go home. We never once talked. Then after school we were taken back to the classroom. We had to wash all the desks and clean the floors under the desks. Not only that we wash the chalkboards and errasers. That was our punishment for two weeks.

In those days alot of us done the chores in the class rooms. I was really good at cleaning chalkboards and errasers that year. It was a year that I will never forget..
